The Colloquium of African Geology (CAG) is a major biennial meeting organized under the auspices of the Geological Society of Africa (GSAf). Since the first colloquium in 1965, several European and African countries have hosted this Colloquium. The African countries that have organized this event include Swaziland, Zimbabwe, Morocco, Mozambique, Tunisia, South Africa, Ethiopia and Tanzania.

At the General Assembly of the Geological Society of Africa (GSAf) held during the 26th Colloquium on 26th November 2016, at the International Conference centre of the University of Ibadan, Ibadan, Nigeria, the organization of the next Colloquium of African Geology (CAG27) as well as the 17th Conference of the Geological Society of Africa (GSAf) was assigned to Portugal.

I therefore welcome you to this Colloquium which will be organized on behalf of GSAf by the Department of Geosciences, University of Aveiro, a famous centre of research and excellence, from the 21st to 28th July 2018.

The theme of the colloquium is also very apt, Africa: A key player for a better and sustainable world.

You may recall that the Colloquium rotates between Africa and Europe. The last five editions were held in Africa namely, Tunisia, South Africa, Ethiopia, Tanzania, and Nigeria. It is therefore heart-warming that this edition is taking place in Europe. Therefore , senior and early-career earth scientists from the academia, government organizations, non-governmental associations, mining companies, civil societies, politics, and media will be welcome from all over the world, especially, but not limited to career scientists from African and other developing countries.

I sincerely believe that the scientific and indeed other sessions will not only be educative but lead to new concepts that will promote sustainable development globally.

On behalf of the Council of the GSAf and the host institution, University of Aveiro, I therefore welcome you heartily
